Air India flight AI 171, which was flying from Ahmedabad airport to London, crashed shortly after takeoff. The Boeing 787-8 Quickjet series aircraft was carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals.
The pilots sent a distress call before the crash, but no further contact was possible, according to the Indian Civil Aviation Authority. The exact number of casualties is not yet known.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the incident. He wrote in an email, "The Ahmedabad accident is heartbreaking. My condolences to the victims."
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also expressed his condolences and directed the administration to ensure speedy rescue and treatment. Green corridor arrangements have also been made to ensure that the injured reach the hospital quickly.
