Zohram Mamdani quickly rose to prominence in last summer’s Democratic primary through a lively social media campaign. His supporters have hailed him as a symbol of a new progressive politics.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani moved to New York with his family at the age of seven. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and earned a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. While in college, he founded the campus chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine.

Mamdani was elected as the Democratic Party candidate in 2020 and joined the New York State Assembly. This is where his political journey began. He quickly gained widespread popularity by working directly on issues affecting ordinary people—rent, public transportation, and education.

He was a relative newcomer when he announced his candidacy for mayor in 2024. But within a year, he had established himself as one of the most talked-about candidates in New York politics.

Mamdani made history by becoming the first Muslim and South Asian mayor in New York City. He has touted his multicultural identity as a symbol of the city's diverse ethnicities. He has even campaigned in Urdu and Spanish.

His key policies and pledges include ensuring affordable housing, free public bus service for all citizens, and universal childcare for children under five.

Mamdani's supporters hope that under his leadership, New York will become a more just, equitable, and affordable city for all.
