An Air India Boeing 787-8 Quickjet aircraft carrying 244 passengers crashed at Ahmedabad airport in Gujarat, India, on Thursday afternoon (June 12). Flight AI 171 was flying from Ahmedabad to London, but crashed shortly after takeoff.

BBC Bangla reported, citing Air India, that there were 169 Indians, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals on board.

Before the crash, the pilots sent a 'Mayday call', which is used as a distress signal. After that, contact with the plane was lost, India's aviation regulator said.

Although the number of casualties was not immediately known, officials concerned fear that many lives will be lost.

Three teams of 90 NDRF members have reached the scene from Gandhinagar to take part in the rescue operation. Three more teams have been sent from Vadodara.

Immediately after the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister and Police Commissioner and assured them of all necessary assistance.
