Former US President Donald Trump has ordered the reopening of the infamous Alcatraz prison, which was closed six decades ago. The Russian news agency TASS reported this information in a report on Sunday (May 4).
Trump said in a statement on his own social media ‘Truth Social’, “Rebuild and open Alcatraz! For too long, America has been plagued by violent and serial criminals. They are the scum of society, who bring only sorrow and suffering.”
He also said, “We will no longer be held hostage by criminals. Not by weak judges, nor by a failed legal system. Now is the time to crack down hard on those who illegally enter the United States and commit crimes.”
According to Trump, the newly built Alcatraz will be a “symbol of law, order and justice.”
Alcatraz: A History at a Glance
This prison, located on an island in San Francisco Bay, was first built in 1912. Initially used as a military prison, it was converted into a maximum-security federal prison in 1936 by the U.S. Department of Justice.
This prison housed many dangerous criminals, including notorious gangster Al Capone. However, it was permanently closed in 1963 due to high costs and management complications.
This historic prison is now being reopened with modern technology and security measures under Trump's orders. However, a new debate has begun in American society about this.
