Government primary school teachers have been on strike across the country since Monday (May 5) to press for three demands. Initially, the strike started for an hour, but they have announced that they will gradually go on a full-day strike.

Teachers say that assistant teachers should be paid at least the 11th grade, the complications of promotion to higher grades after completing 10 and 16 years in the job should be eliminated, and 100% promotion opportunities for head teachers should be ensured.

Currently, there are about 4.5 million primary teachers working in the country. Until now, assistant teachers were getting salaries at the 13th grade and head teachers at the 11th grade.

Meanwhile, on March 13, the High Court in a verdict ordered that about 30,000 head teachers of government primary schools be given the status of second-class officers and their salaries be fixed at the 10th grade. According to that verdict, the government has increased the salary grade of head teachers by one step. In addition, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has said that a policy decision has been taken to raise the salary of assistant teachers to the 12th grade.

However, teachers say that this is not enough. They initially demanded the implementation of grade 11 and announced that they would continue the movement until it was achieved.
