In a joint discussion after meeting with Italian Home Minister Matteo Piantidosi at the meeting room of the Home Ministry at the Secretariat on Monday (May 5), Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the Italian government has expressed interest in taking more workers from Bangladesh through legal channels.

He said that the Italian side has recognized Bangladeshi workers as hard workers and has expressed interest in taking new workers through legal channels. They also want to discourage the trend of irregular entry by sea. Bangladesh has requested that the government consider legalizing the workers who are already irregularly staying in Italy.

When asked how many Bangladeshi workers are currently in Italy, the advisor said that although the exact number is not known, it is estimated that about one lakh Bangladeshis are working there. However, new recruitment will be done only through legal processes.
