Like other parts of the Middle East, Gaza, the Palestinian enclave, celebrates Eid al-Adha on June 6. But this day of joy has turned into a day of mourning after Israeli forces attacked it. At least 117 Palestinians were killed in Gaza on Eid and the day after.

On Eid, June 6, 42 people were killed in Israeli strikes, and on June 7, at least 75 more were killed and about 100 injured in airstrikes. Al Jazeera reported that the Gaza Civil Defense Department confirmed this information.

Among the dead were 16 members of a family from the Sabra area of Gaza City, six of whom were children. Gaza Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassel said there was no warning before the attack. Many are still trapped under the rubble.

He called it a "cold-blooded massacre."

Gaza City residents said that where they would have spent the morning of Eid with their families in other years, this time they were carrying the bodies of children and relatives.

The Israeli military claimed that the June 7 operation was aimed at Hamas leader Assad Abu Sharia, who was involved in the October 7, 2023 attack.

Israel has been conducting an operation in Gaza since that attack in 2023, which has not stopped yet. In 17 months, 54,677 Palestinians have been killed and 125,530 injured in Israeli attacks, more than half of whom are women and children.

Although the international community, including the United Nations, has been calling for an end to the fighting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that the operation will continue until Hamas is completely destroyed.
