An attack was carried out on the convoy of Syeda Rizwana Hasan, an advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, in the Daodhara Kataban area of Nalitabari, Sherpur. At least six journalists were injured in the attack on Monday (May 26) afternoon.
Advisor Rizwana Hasan visited the area in view of the local administration's plan to set up a tourist center in the forest area surrounded by the Garo Hills. She said, "There will be no tourist center on forest land," and also informed about the plan to build an elephant sanctuary in the area.
After her speech, a section of locals became angry. Both sides, for and against the tourist center, got involved in protests. At one stage, the agitated crowd surrounded the advisor's convoy and attacked journalists.
Among the injured are Jahidul Khan Sourav of Now TV, Babu Chakraborty of Somoy TV, Naeem Islam of Bangla TV and Shahriar Shakir of Bangladesh Khabar and two others.
According to the Forest Department, out of the approximately 21,000 acres of forest land in the three upazilas adjacent to the Garo Hills in Sherpur, only 15 percent is occupied. Recently, the administration planned to build a tourist center on 223 acres of private land, of which 32 acres of land was identified as the protected Pathar Mahal. The work was stopped due to objections from the Forest Department.
After the incident, many people are expressing condemnation and concern on social media. Journalists' organizations including the Sherpur Press Club have protested the attack.
