The Appellate Division will announce the verdict on the appeal of former Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, who was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity in 1971, on Tuesday (May 27). A seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed will deliver the verdict.

Advocate Shishir Monir, who represented Azhar, expressed hope that his client would be acquitted in the verdict, heard the case.

The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azhar to death on December 30, 2014. He appealed in 2015, which was rejected by the Appellate Division in 2019 and the death sentence upheld. Later, after a review petition, permission was granted to hear the appeal again in 2024—the first time such a thing has happened in a crime against humanity case.

Azharul Islam has been in prison since his arrest on August 22, 2012.
