Yaorong Wan, a 50-year-old international jewel thief living in Queens, New York, has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $260,000 worth of diamond rings from the showrooms of renowned jewelry brands Tiffany & Co. and Cartier using a unique technique.
In March 2024, Wan replaced the original $225,000 ring with a meticulously crafted fake ring while looking at a diamond ring at a Tiffany store in Manhattan. He also used the same technique to remove another $24,000 ring from a Cartier.
His main method was to confuse employees and skillfully replace the real jewelry with fake gems. Authorities said Wan is being investigated for other international thefts. He was wanted by Interpol for stealing $330,000 worth of diamonds in South Korea.
Wan has also used similar techniques to steal in California, Florida, New Jersey and Long Island, USA. He also stole a $17,000 Chopard watch from a London jeweler in April 2024.
The stolen watch and other items were recovered from him during his arrest at his home in Flushing, Queens, in May 2024. He is currently in custody on multiple outstanding warrants.
Wan is expected to be sentenced to three to nine months in prison at his July 14 hearing after pleading guilty.
