After a long period of tension and mutual threats, indirect talks between the United States and Iran on their nuclear program and sanctions have finally been held in the Omani capital Muscat. The first round of talks ended on Saturday (April 12) with several rounds of message exchanges.

Progress on the path to agreement

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that both sides had shown interest in reaching an agreement during the talks, according to the world-renowned news agency Reuters. The White House also stated that the talks were "constructive and encouraging."

It is reported that both sides have agreed to hold a second round of talks next week.

Indirect talks, mediation by Oman

Although US representative Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were in separate rooms, the talks lasted for about two and a half hours under the mediation of the Omani government. During this time, several rounds of messages were exchanged between the two sides.

At the end of the talks, Araghchi and Witkoff spoke briefly in the presence of Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaid.

Further talks possible, scheduled for April 19

In a statement on Iranian state television, Araghchi said, “In the first round, both sides showed a sincere interest in reaching an agreement. The second round of talks could take place on April 19. However, the venue and the content have not yet been finalized.”

He added that he saw no objection to the US’s goodwill, and that the start was positive.

White House response

In a statement, the White House said, “While the issues under discussion are complex, this indirect dialogue is an important step towards mutual understanding.”

Steve Witkoff told Araghchi during the talks that President Donald Trump had instructed that a solution be found through diplomatic means.

Oman's message

Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi said on social media, "The atmosphere of the talks was peaceful and respectful. Such dialogues will continue for the sake of regional and global peace and stability."
