A fire broke out in the premises of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University in the early hours of Saturday (April 12). One of the two main motifs prepared for the Bengali New Year's joyous procession was completely burnt down and the other was partially damaged.
It is learnt that the incident took place shortly before 5 am. It is not yet known who started the fire. According to eyewitnesses, a symbolic face was completely burnt in the fire and a dove of peace was partially burnt down.
A section of former students of the Faculty of Fine Arts have alleged that such an incident was intentional after preparations for the procession were almost complete. They claim that it is a conspiracy that has been carried out targeting art and freedom of expression.
Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Professor Azharul Islam Chanchal, confirmed the fire incident. He said that the university authorities are looking into the matter seriously and further steps will be taken after discussing with the Proctor's Office and the faculty.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Crime and Operation) Additional Commissioner SM Md. Nazrul Islam said, “The incident clearly seems to be premeditated. The detention team is coming to the spot, the details will be known during the investigation.”
The initial assumption of the police is that while setting fire to the main motif, the fire also spread to the pigeon motif next to it.
It is worth noting that the symbolic structure that was created for this year’s procession was a giant mask of about 20 feet in height, which is made as a metaphor against the hegemony and oppression of society. In addition, a white pigeon as a symbol of peace was also part of the procession.
