Due to the shutdown program of customs officials and employees, 3,680 containers of exports have been stopped in a day at the Chittagong port. Most of these containers carry garments. As a result, it is not possible to reach the goods to foreign buyers on time. There is no precedent in the history of the port for such a large number of container exports to be stopped in a single day.

Three ships at the port jetty were supposed to leave on Sunday with export containers, but due to the shutdown, no container depot could be sent to the port on Saturday and Sunday. This has left three ships—‘AS Cecilia’, ‘Express Nilwala’ and ‘Hong Da Jin-68’—idle. The ship ‘AS Cecilia’ was supposed to be heading to Singapore with 564 containers, where they would have been handed over to larger ships on the Europe and America route.

Goods have accumulated in the depots as the necessary customs officials have not arrived for customs clearance. Due to the shutdown of customs clearance activities, it is not possible to send any new containers to the port.

The shutdown program, which began in protest of the NBR reforms, has spread to the country's customs offices. The Chittagong Customs House, being the largest station in the country, has been the most affected. The suspension of import and export activities from the port premises has created a blockade in the port area.

Port Secretary Md. Omar Faruk said that the customs program has had a major impact on import and export activities at the port. No new containers are being unloaded or exported.
