The recent internal discussions and suggestions regarding the dress code for Bangladesh Bank employees have now been withdrawn, said Arif Hossain Khan, executive director and spokesperson of the central bank.

In a statement sent to the media on Thursday (July 24), it was said that some departmental meetings discussed and proposed professional and elegant attire for all levels of officials and employees working at Bangladesh Bank, considering the social context. However, no policy decision was taken in this regard and no circular was issued.

The statement further said that when the matter came to the attention of Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, who is stationed abroad, he expressed his dissatisfaction over it. On his instructions, the matter was immediately withdrawn.

Central bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said, “There were discussions in some departmental meetings regarding the dress code, but it was only at the advisory level. It was not a mandatory directive in any way.” He added that if any such decision is made in the future, it will be officially published in the form of a circular.

It is worth noting that a report published in an online media outlet on Wednesday (July 23) night claimed that a circular dated July 21 from the Human Resources Department-2 of Bangladesh Bank has directed female employees to refrain from wearing short-sleeved and short-length dresses, leggings, etc. It also recommends wearing sarees, salwar-kameez and veils, along with formal sandals or shoes and plain hijab.

However, the central bank said that this was only a proposal to discourage overly ostentatious clothing, which in no way interferes with anyone's freedom of personal dress.
