India has suspended funding and construction of a rail link project worth nearly Rs 5,000 crore in Bangladesh due to political unrest and concerns over worker safety, according to a report in The Hindu. India's decision has halted three ongoing projects and five survey works, according to a report in The Hindu.

The projects that have been suspended include the Akhaura-Agartala rail link, the Khulna-Mongla Port rail line and the Dhaka-Tongi-Joydevpur rail line expansion. Of this, India was providing Rs 4 billion for the Akhaura-Agartala project, of which 6.78 km is in Bangladesh.

Indian authorities have said that they will not send construction materials or financing to Bangladesh until political stability returns. In this situation, plans to establish a rail link with the mainland in India's northeastern region, known as the 'Seven Sisters', are being disrupted.

In this situation, New Delhi is looking for alternative connections. The feasibility of a Rs 3,500 to 4,000 crore rail link plan through Bhutan and Nepal is being examined. At the same time, work is underway to strengthen rail infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

According to The Hindu, these projects were strategically important for India, as they were supposed to reduce dependence on the narrow Siliguri corridor and provide connectivity to the northeast via Bangladesh.
