At least 59 Palestinians were killed and over 220 wounded on Tuesday when Israeli tanks shelled a crowd waiting for food aid on a main road in Khan Younis, according to medics. Eyewitnesses said Israeli forces fired shells into a crowd of thousands gathered near stalled aid trucks.

"All of a sudden, they let us move forward, and then tank shells started falling," said Alaa, a survivor interviewed at Nasser Hospital, where casualties filled corridors and floors. "People are dying trying to get food for their children."

The Israeli military confirmed its forces fired in the area after a crowd approached troops near a stuck aid truck. It said the incident is under review and expressed regret for harm to civilians, claiming efforts to minimize casualties.

Palestinian health officials said Tuesday marked the deadliest single day since aid resumed in May. In total, at least 73 Palestinians were killed across Gaza that day, including 14 from other Israeli strikes.

Since late May, 397 Palestinians seeking food aid have reportedly been killed and over 3,000 wounded. Gaza's Health Ministry blames Israeli actions, while Israel routes most aid through the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), criticized by the UN as unsafe and biased. GHF stated the attack occurred near a UN World Food Program site, not one of its own.

The war, triggered by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, has so far killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people, fueling a severe hunger crisis.
