Although the capacity of Chittagong Port is 53,518 TEUs (20-foot containers), 45,377 TEUs of containers were deposited there on Tuesday (May 27). There were 87 ships at the outer berth of the port, of which 13 were container ships and 49 were open cargo ships that unloaded goods. Containers were loaded and unloaded on 12 ships at the jetty.
Earlier, the maximum number of 44,231 TEUs of containers was deposited at the port on May 20. Although it decreased slightly later, the congestion has increased again as container unloading and exports are delayed due to slow customs clearance.
Port sources said that a total of 9,520 TEUs of containers have been handled in the last 24 hours. Of this, 6,511 TEUs came from ships, 2,695 TEUs were containers of export goods and 807 TEUs were empty containers from off-dock. During this time, 3,009 TEUs of containers were loaded and 1,368 TEUs of containers were unloaded from within the port.
Currently, 105 cargo ships are berthed at the port's jetty and outer anchorage, of which 67 are unloading containers and bulk goods.
