The NBR officials' movement demanding the repeal of the Government Jobs (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 has intensified. The NBR Reform Unity Council announced that all types of customs activities, including import-export clearances, will be suspended from tomorrow, Monday (May 26). Only international passenger transport will be exempted from its scope.

Until yesterday (May 24), import activities were completely suspended at the Chittagong port. 90 percent of the country's foreign trade is conducted through this port. The Benapole Custom House has also closed its operations, while Dhaka Customs is operating on a limited scale. In addition, activities at tax and VAT offices are also suspended.

More than 4,000 containers have been stuck at the Chittagong port due to the movement. Industry leaders have expressed fears that the ongoing stalemate could result in a loss of about $250 million per day. Foreign buyers are threatening to cancel orders, which could threaten the country's export sector and foreign trade.

Chittagong C&F Agents Association President SM Saiful Alam said the strike has virtually brought the port to a standstill, with importers facing additional costs.

Industry owners say the crisis will damage both the country's economy and international reputation if not resolved quickly. Bangladesh Chamber of Industries President Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez said the trade losses could be severe if the issue is not resolved quickly through negotiations.
