On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian armed group Hamas launched attacks on various illegal settlements in the occupied Israeli territory. About 1,200 Israelis were killed and about 250 were captured in Gaza.
In April 2024, the head of military intelligence, Major General (retd.) Aharon Haliva, resigned, taking responsibility for the failure to prevent Hamas's "Operation Al-Aqsa Flood".
Israeli media outlet Channel 12 leaked an audio recording in which Aharon is heard saying that for every Israeli killed in the October 7 incident, 50 Palestinians should be killed. He described this massacre as "necessary for future generations".
Aharon also said that the Palestinians need another mass displacement and that the Israelis must understand the cost of killing. He also mentioned the displacement of Palestinians in 1948.
