A new type of e-rickshaw is being trialled in three areas of Dhaka North and South City from August. This environmentally friendly and safe three-wheeled battery-powered vehicle has been developed by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
Local Government Advisor Asif Mahmud gave this information at the inauguration of the training program for e-rickshaw drivers at Dhaka North City Corporation on Saturday (June 28) morning.
He said, "Unregulated rickshaws in Dhaka have been a long-standing problem. These auto rickshaws are responsible for about 32 percent of road accidents. Initiatives have been taken to introduce e-rickshaws as a safe alternative. An online licensing system will also be introduced for the new rickshaws."
Initially, these e-rickshaws will be launched in Paltan and Dhanmondi areas of Dhaka South City and Uttara areas of North City.
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz said at the event that the new rickshaws will come to the market from the beginning of August. Unauthorized rickshaws will be gradually removed from the designated zones of the two cities.
Regarding the training program, it was informed that an initiative to improve the skills of drivers is being launched under the supervision of the Local Government Department and in collaboration with BRAC. Master trainers will be developed and drivers will be trained at the field level.
In this project, a total of 300 trainees, including 200 from the Directorate of Youth Development of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and young people associated with the anti-discrimination student movement and 100 from the DMP, have been selected.
