Customs operations at the country's main seaport, Chittagong, have gradually returned to normal since Monday morning (June 30).
Due to the shutdown program called by customs officials and employees under the NBR, operations at all custom houses and stations across the country have been disrupted since Saturday morning. To resolve the issue, the government formed a five-member committee and declared customs as an 'essential service'. Along with this, a stern warning was issued to the protesting officials, urging them to return to work and demanding strict action be taken in the interest of the people and the economy.
Following this government announcement, the customs officials decided to withdraw the protest on Sunday evening and return to work.
According to port sources, the activities of unloading import containers, loading export containers onto ships and releasing goods have started in full swing at the port since Monday morning. Export goods are also being brought to the port from private depots.
Chittagong Port Secretary Md. Omar Farooq said, "The port has returned to normal operations since the strike was called off. The process of quickly removing containers that were stuck in the yard after two days of gridlock is underway."
He added that loading and unloading of containers from ships, unloading of goods and export activities have returned to their previous pace.
