A statement from the Gaza Health Ministry late on Friday (May 30) said that 72 Palestinians were killed and 278 others were injured in Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.

The statement said that the IDF carried out the attacks from Thursday evening to Friday evening. The actual number of dead and injured could be higher, as many people are still buried under the rubble and have not been rescued.

After a 15-month military campaign, Israel agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza on January 19 under international pressure. After almost two months of relative peace, Israel resumed airstrikes in the third week of March, citing disagreements with Hamas.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 3,986 Palestinians have been killed and 11,451 injured in the renewed offensive, which began on March 18. The ceasefire agreement, which came into effect in January this year, has been effectively broken by Israel with these attacks.

According to the United Nations, the conflict has displaced about 90 percent of Gaza's Palestinian population and completely destroyed or damaged most of its infrastructure.

Earlier, in November 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

The total number of deaths in Gaza since the operation began in October 2023 has risen to 54,321 and 123,770 have been injured. 56 percent of the dead and injured are women and children.
