World leaders have been calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, devastated by Israel's ongoing aggression, and for humanitarian aid to be allowed in. In this context, a resolution was tabled in the UN Security Council on Wednesday (June 4). However, it was not adopted due to the US veto. Reuters reports.

In the vote held at the UN headquarters in New York, the United States was the only member of the 15-member Security Council to vote against the resolution. This was the first ceasefire resolution since last November, which was still blocked by the US.

The resolution calls for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as well as the dignified release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups. It also calls for the lifting of all restrictions on aid to Gaza, highlighting the humanitarian disaster in Palestine.

Regarding the veto, the US representative in the Security Council said that the United States will not agree to any resolution that does not include condemnation of Hamas' attacks and a call for the organization to leave Gaza. Before the vote, Dorothy Shea, the acting US ambassador to the UN, made her opposition to the resolution clear. "The United States has been saying since the beginning of the conflict that Israel has the right to defend itself," she said.
