BNP Standing Committee meeting has strongly reacted to the speech given to the nation by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. In the meeting held on Friday (June 6) night under the chairmanship of Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, the leaders commented that the wording used in the speech of the Chief Advisor had crossed the limits of political decency and his speech was not on the occasion of Eid, but was politically motivated.
The leaders said in the meeting that the speech highlighted some issues including ports and corridors, which do not fall under the mandate of the interim government. Especially regarding the timing of the national election, it was said that the proposal to hold the election in the first half of April 2026 is not realistic. The meeting said that the election activities may be disrupted due to the weather and the month of Ramadan at that time, which can be used as an excuse to postpone the election.
The BNP said that the people of the country have been deprived of voting rights for almost a decade and a half. They are continuing the fight to re-establish democracy even through disappearances, murders, imprisonment and torture.
The Standing Committee believes that although the people came close to victory through the sacrifices and movements of the students and the public in July-August 2024, disappointment has been created by pushing the election into a long process. Therefore, the meeting demanded that the election be held again within December.
According to BNP, although there is talk of a non-partisan interim government, the opinions of most parties are being ignored due to the influence of a particular political group. This has called into question the neutrality of the government and has created apprehension among the people about the possibility of free and fair elections.
It is worth noting that in his address to the nation, Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus said that the national elections will be held in the first half of April 2026 and the Election Commission will soon give a detailed roadmap in this regard.
