Local BNP and Swechchhasebak Dal leaders and activists are angry over the appointment of Shahidul Islam, a well-known face of Chhatra League, as the convener of the volunteer party in Chittagong's North Pahartali ward. The day after the appointment, they held a protest march in the area on Friday and a program has been announced for Monday afternoon as well.

Nasir Ahmed, joint convener of the Thana Swechchhasebak Dal in Ward No. 9 under Akbar Shah Police Station, expressed his anger over this. He said, "A well-known person from Chhatra League has been appointed as the convener, excluding those who have been the victims of lawsuits and attacks, which is very sad." He also claimed that he has resigned in protest over this incident.

Ward BNP convener Rehan Uddin said, "The new convener Shahidul has never been seen in any party program. Trinamool leaders and activists know him as a Chhatra League worker."

Mohammad Rony, a long-time activist of the Swechchhasebak Dal, said, “I have been accused in three cases on behalf of the party. Yet, someone who is a well-known face of Chhatra League has been given a place in the committee. This is not only insulting, but can also be suicidal for the party.”

The aggrieved leaders and activists are alleging that like the ward committees, the police station committees have also been formed hastily and without verification. They also said that the matter has been brought to the attention of the central leaders.

Shahidul Islam, convener of the North Pahartali Ward No. 9 Volunteer Party, told Prothom Alo that he is not known because he does not live in the area, but he used to participate in processions and rallies in the city. He said about the photos and videos taken at social events that they are not from the party's programs. Shahidul claimed that no case was filed against him because he was cautious during the ousted Awami League government and that the information about his friendship with Chhatra League and Awami League leaders and activists is not correct.

Regarding the anger of local leaders, Member Secretary of the City Volunteer Party, Zamir Uddin, said that a serious investigation is underway regarding the formation of the committee. Since many committees were announced at the same time, there may be some mistakes. If evidence is found, the concerned people will be eliminated.
