The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has issued arrest warrants against 26 accused in the murder case of Begum Rokeya University student Abu Sayeed in Rangpur. The tribunal headed by Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Chowdhury issued the order on Monday (June 30) afternoon.
Earlier, on June 24, the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal submitted the investigation report of the case to the prosecutor's office. After that, 30 people, including former proctor of the university, Shariful Islam, were made accused in the formal charges. Other accused include former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the police Amir Hossain, former constable Sujan Chandra Roy and leader of the banned organization Chhatra League Imran Chowdhury Akash.
From movement to murder and mass uprising
Abu Sayeed was shot at Park intersection in Rangpur on the afternoon of July 16, 2024, during the ongoing student movement demanding quota reform in government jobs. He was a 12th batch student of the English Department of Begum Rokeya University and a key organizer of the quota reform movement.
When the video of the unarmed Abu Sayeed being shot went viral on social media, there was outrage across the country. Students took to the streets again to protest the killing. The movement gained momentum and on August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India in the face of a student-public uprising.
