BNP leader Ishraq Hossain's supporters have been staging a sit-in program all night long on the road in front of the Kakrail Mosque, demanding that he be made the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. Their protest continued around 10 am on Thursday (May 22).

The leaders and activists said that they had been stationed at the Kakrail intersection since Wednesday evening and had been raising slogans despite the storm and rain throughout the night. In the morning, more than a hundred leaders and activists had taken positions in front of the barricades, many of whom had spread tarpaulins and rested on the road. Swechchhasebak Dal leaders and activists also took positions along the road leading from Kakrail to Matsya Bhaban.

After holding a program in front of the Nagar Bhaban for several days, they have been stationed in Kakrail and the surrounding areas since Wednesday morning. In the evening, Ishraq Hossain himself came to the protest and said that the movement will continue until he gets the responsibility as mayor. At that time, he also demanded the resignation of interim government advisors Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan and Mahfuz Alam.

The High Court will announce the order today on the writ petition seeking the validity of Ishraq's gazette notification as mayor and the suspension of the oath-taking ceremony. Security has been beefed up in Kakrail, Jamuna and the Supreme Court areas in view of the order. Army, police, BGB and armored vehicles have been deployed in the court premises.
