The US State Department on Friday updated its travel advisory to a Level 3 (Revised) warning for citizens traveling to Bangladesh. It advised avoiding all gatherings due to the risk of violent protests.
The statement expressed concern about the law and order situation and said that there is a risk of mugging, theft, drug dealing and pickpocketing in major cities including Dhaka.
In addition, a Level 4 (Travel Ban) warning has been issued for the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Khagrachari, Rangamati, Bandarban). There is a risk of terrorism, kidnapping and violence in that area.
US officials working at the embassy in Dhaka have also been asked to refrain from non-essential travel outside the capital. It has also been informed to seek permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs before traveling to the hilly areas.
