Nationwide Suspension of Anti-Discrimination Committees Halts Progress

On Sunday (July 27) afternoon, Rifat Rashid, president of the central committee of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, announced the suspension of the activities of all regional and branch committees of the organization at an emergency press conference in Shahbagh, the capital. At the time, he said, "If anyone uses the name of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement to commit any misdeed after the suspension of the committee, legal action will be taken against them."


He also said that a decision will be announced soon on how the organization will be run in the future.


Earlier, on the morning of July 17, five people including Abdur Razzak Riyad, joint convener of the private university branch of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, went to the house of former MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan, Dhaka and demanded a ransom of Tk 50 lakh. They also took Tk 10 lakh that day. Then, on the night of July 26, when he went to the house again to collect the remaining money, Shammi Ahmed informed the police. Gulshan Police Station Police quickly went to the spot and arrested the five people red-handed.


An extortion case was filed at Gulshan Police Station on Sunday morning against six people, including Riyad. The other accused are Kazi Gaurab Apu, Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab, Md. Ibrahim Hossain and Md. Aminul Islam.


After the case, the court ordered Abdur Razzak Riyad, Sakadaun Siam, Sadman Sadab and Md. Ibrahim Hossain to be sent on a 7-day remand.
