The decision to ban the activities of the Awami League will not bring any negative reaction from the international community, said Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary of the interim government's chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
In a post on his verified Facebook account on Sunday (May 11) morning, he wrote, "I do not believe that the world will lament the ban on the activities of the Awami League. This ban was necessary to protect national security and sovereignty, ensure the safety of the July Movement activists, and protect the plaintiffs and witnesses of the International Crimes Tribunal."
In the post, he also claimed that the UN report had 'proven beyond doubt' that the leadership, activists, and affiliated organizations of the Awami League were involved in crimes against humanity. He wrote, "This party has destroyed democracy and the electoral process. Their leaders and supporters are involved in bank robbery, money laundering, and corruption."
Citing the example of Western democracies, Shafiqul Alam wrote, “Nazi and fascist parties were banned in Germany and Italy after World War II. Some political parties were also banned in Spain and Belgium for their abolitionist activities. As a result, we believe that no one in the democratic world would take a stand for such a ‘murderous and corrupt’ party.”
At the end of the post, he said, “We do not expect any international adverse reaction to the ban on the Awami League.”
