Today is the second Sunday of May — International Mother's Day. Today is a day to express respect, love and gratitude to all the loving mothers in the world. The role of a mother in bearing, nurturing and selfless love is incomparable to anything.

International Mother's Day began in 1908, at the initiative of a woman named Anna Jarvis in Philadelphia, USA. The first event organized in memory of her late mother gradually spread around the world. In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson officially recognized the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day.

Mother's Day is being celebrated in many countries of the world, including Bangladesh, today. Children try to return their love by giving gifts, flowers or time to show their love for their mothers. However, this special day is not just for formalities — but rather reminds us of the importance of daily respect and care for mothers.

'Mother' — this small word hides endless sacrifice, compassion and selfless love. From birth to death, a child is surrounded by his mother's love at every moment. And so, there is no need for a special day to love a mother — every day should be Mother's Day.

Throughout the history of religion, literature, and culture, the honor of a mother is above all. In the Holy Quran, Allah has specifically mentioned the status of a mother: "We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents. His mother bore him with hardship after hardship..." (Surah Luqman, verse: 14).

There is a surprising similarity in the sound of the word 'mother' in various languages of the world. In Bengali, Hindi, Chinese, Swahili, and even ancient Egyptian, mother is called with a pronunciation similar to 'ma'. According to linguists, this sweet call - 'ma' - came from the baby's first attempt to say the word.

Today, we do not stop at just greetings, but strengthen the bond of responsibility and love for mothers in our daily lives — this is the true meaning of World Mother's Day.
