Police have so far arrested 56 Awami League leaders and activists in connection with the attack on the car of Hasnat Abdullah, the main organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in the southern region, in Gazipur.
On Monday (May 5) afternoon, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Rabiul Hasan confirmed the matter. He said that immediately after the attack, multiple police teams launched a raid and arrested them from different areas after conducting raids throughout the night. However, no complaint or case has been filed with the police station in this incident yet.
The attack on NCP leader Hasnat took place on Sunday evening while he was in a Dhaka-bound microbus in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur metropolis. Eyewitnesses claim that the attackers broke the window glass of the car by throwing sharp weapons and stones. Hasnat was injured in the elbow of his hand.
He ran and took shelter inside the International University of Technology (IUT) in Board Bazar with the help of nearby locals. When the news spread, hundreds of students and NCP workers gathered there and started a protest. Later, the leaders and activists of the organization took out a torch procession and demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers.
After the incident, Shaheen Khan, OC of Basan Police Station in the metropolis, said that 10-12 motorcycle riders followed Hasnat's car while he was returning to Dhaka after a program in Salna and attacked his car as it crossed the Chandana intersection.
Police said that after the incident, senior officials visited the scene and ordered a quick operation.
