Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) in the northern region, said that if the lotus flower is not accepted as a political symbol, then the paddy ear will not be valid as a symbol either.
In a post on his verified Facebook ID on Wednesday (July 9) night, he wrote, "The lotus flower is not a national symbol, but a part of the national symbol—like the paddy ear, jute leaf or star. If these parts can be used as a political symbol, then the lotus flower can also be used. And if the lotus flower cannot be used, the validity of the paddy ear is also questionable."
He further wrote, "There is no legal obstacle to the lotus flower being the symbol of the national flower. Because, the national fruit jackfruit is also already being used as a symbol. And if someone is scared just by looking at the symbol, then it should be clearly stated."
Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) took a policy decision not to include the lotus flower in the list of election symbols. Election Commissioner Abdur Rahman said that the Shapla will not be included as a symbol in the new proposed list. Because the constitution has clear provisions regarding national symbols and flags. Although nothing specific has been said about the national flower or national bird, the commission said that this decision has been taken to protect the dignity of the Shapla.
