The 72-hour transport strike called for 8-point demands, including amendments to the Road Transport Act, has been withdrawn with the assurance of official talks. The decision was made at a meeting between the government and transport owners at Bijoy Bhaban on Sunday (August 10).
The government assured the meeting to start a process to resolve the demands. The meeting was presided over by Fawzul Kabir Khan, advisor to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, coordinator of the Nationalist Workers' Party, announced the withdrawal of the transport strike.
Senior Secretary of the Roads Division Ehsanul Haque, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Dr. Sheikh Moinuddin, Secretary General of the Transport Owners' Association Saiful Alam and leaders of the transport sector were also present at the meeting.
The 8-point demands include—amendment of the Road Transport Act 2018, fixing the economic life of commercial vehicles at 30 years, suspension of BRTA operations against old vehicles, cancellation of double advance income tax, extension of import period for reconditioned vehicles, return of seized vehicles to their owners within 72 hours, formulation of scrap policy, separate lanes for three-wheelers on highways and prompt provision of driving licenses.
Earlier, on July 27, the Bangladesh Transport Owners-Workers Coordination Council announced a 72-hour strike from August 12 to press for its demands.
