At a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Sunday (August 10), the Road Safety Foundation said that 37,382 people were killed and 59,597 injured in 34,894 road accidents in the country from January 2020 to July 2025.
At the press conference, the organization's vice chairman and public transport expert Syed Md. Jahangir highlighted the anarchy of the road transport system and presented an 18-point reform proposal to be implemented in three phases over the 2025-2031 period to ensure road safety.
Short-term (2025–2027) proposals include:
Restructuring the National Road Safety Council
Appointing technical experts in BRTA-BRTC-DTCA
Introducing road tests for driving licenses
Formulating road safety laws
Developing traffic management
Tk 700 crore trust fund for accident victims
Medium-term (2025–2029) plans include:
Modern safety technology in vehicles (ITS, GPS, cameras)
Quick removal of expired vehicles
Company-based bus service
Launching own buses in schools and colleges
Motorcycle speed control
Long-term (2025–2031) goals:
Multi-storey hydraulic parking in Dhaka
Safety and registration of small vehicles
Forming a unified Ministry of Communications by combining roads, railways and waterways
Syed Md. Jahangir said that there is anarchy in the country's road system at many levels. The main causes of accidents include driver incompetence, vehicle defects, lawlessness, and weak infrastructure.
He also said that safe roads require not only infrastructure but also behavioral changes, strict law enforcement, use of technology, and administrative coordination. For this, the political will of the government and joint efforts of all parties are essential.
