The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has released a complete list of 626 people who took refuge in cantonments to save their lives after the political upheaval of August 5. The matter was announced in a press release on Thursday (May 22) night.
The ISPR said that after the fall of the then government in the mass uprising of students and the public in July-August 2024, the law and order situation in the country deteriorated drastically due to violent activities of various evil groups. The common people were insecure due to various forms of violence including attacks on police stations and government offices, arson, looting, and extrajudicial killings.
In this situation, 626 citizens of different classes, including political figures, administrative officers, police members, and judges, took refuge in various cantonments in the country including Dhaka. Among them are 24 political figures, 5 judges, 19 administrative officers, 515 police members, 12 citizens of different classes, and 51 family members including women and children.
ISPR said that priority was given to saving the lives of asylum seekers on humanitarian grounds before verifying their identities. After the situation improved, most of the asylum seekers left the cantonment within 1-2 days. At that time, 5 people were handed over to the law enforcement agencies through legal process.
The organization also said that on August 18, the list of 193 asylum seekers was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs and it was a settled matter. However, the notice also mentioned that some vested interests are trying to tarnish the image of the army by spreading misleading information.
ISPR urged everyone to be wary of such propaganda and said that the Bangladesh Army will always stand by the country with professionalism, honesty and sense of responsibility.
