Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government, said, “We are responsible for the destruction of the world—we are all guilty.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the World Environment Day and Environment and Tree Fair at the China-Maitree Conference Center in the capital on Wednesday (June 25), he said, “Those who are responsible for the destruction of the world are all of us present here. We are guilty.”

He said, “In the words of the old poets—if all the water in the ocean were ink, if all the trees in the forest were pens, the story of our crimes would not end. We are committing the same crime against nature every day.”

Commenting on the crisis not being a natural crisis, but a man-made crisis—Yunus said, “We were supposed to keep pace with nature, but we have walked the opposite path. It is not nature, but man who is destroying nature.”

Highlighting the severity of the climate crisis, he said, “This crisis is looming before us in a giant form. It is as if it says, ‘We cannot live together—either you will live or I will not.’”

Highlighting the harmful aspects of plastic, he said that it has exacerbated three major crises—climate change, degradation of nature, and destruction of biodiversity. Plastic is challenging, saying, ‘Either we will live or you will live.’ Its triumphant march is on, and we stand helplessly watching it.

He further said, “Plastic is an object that has a birth, but no death. We will celebrate the day, return home and use plastic as usual—this duality is pushing us towards defeat.”

Calling for a change in lifestyle, he said, “To survive in this war, we have to bring about a radical change in the way people live. Otherwise, our defeat is inevitable.
