Bangladesh is taking a loan of US$ 270 million (about Tk 3,283 crore) from the World Bank to implement the ‘B-Strong’ project. The loan agreement was signed between the Bangladesh government and the World Bank at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in Agargaon in the capital on Sunday (May 25).
ERD Secretary Md. Shahriar Quader Siddiqui signed the agreement on behalf of the Bangladesh government and Gail Martin, Acting Country Director of the World Bank’s Dhaka office.
The ‘Bangladesh Sustainable Emergency Recovery Preparedness and Response’ (B-Strong) project will be implemented from July 2025 to December 2030. Five ministries and departments will participate in it. The main objective of the project is to reconstruct the infrastructure damaged in the 2024 floods and provide assistance and rehabilitation to the victims.
This loan will be repaid over 30 years, including a grace period of 5 years, from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA). It carries an annual service charge of 0.75% and an interest of 1.25%, but is exempt from commitment fees.
The World Bank is Bangladesh's largest multilateral development partner. It has committed over $43.50 billion to date and is currently financing 47 projects worth $13.10 billion.
