The chief advisor to the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has invited the leaders of the two major political parties, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, to a meeting in the context of the ongoing political unrest. BNP leaders have been invited to his residence 'Jamuna' at 7:30 pm on Saturday (May 24) and Jamaat leaders at 8:30 pm.

BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that they will participate in the meeting as scheduled. Jamaat Naib Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said that they had already asked for time to discuss the situation in the country and now the time for the night meeting has been confirmed from the chief advisor's office.

The BNP delegation will be led by Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Jamaat will be led by the party's Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.

Earlier on Thursday, tension spread in the political arena when BNP said that it wants elections by December. Then, National Republic Party chief Nahid Islam claimed that the chief advisor is thinking of resigning. However, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, the chief advisor's assistant, said on social media that Yunus is not resigning.

Sources said Yunus is unhappy with various recent incidents. The comments of the army chief and the EC, the unrest surrounding the abolition of the NBR, harassment of businessmen, political violence and some activities of the advisors have disturbed him. However, the BNP said that they do not want the chief advisor to resign, but if he steps down, the people will decide.
