The interim government's chief advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus is not resigning, said his special assistant engineer and technologist Faiz Ahmed Tayyab. He made this known in a post on his verified Facebook ID on Friday (May 23).
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab wrote, "Professor Dr. Yunus does not need power, but he is needed for Bangladesh's peaceful democratic transition." He added, "The government needs to be more effective and visible, advisors need to play a more active role so that the people can see the progress of change."
Noting that Dr. Yunus has a reputation in the world, he said, "It is our responsibility to protect this respect." At the same time, he emphasized regular discussions and coordination with political parties.
Regarding the army, he said, "The army of any civilized country does not interfere in politics. The Bangladesh Army should be respected, but not by making hasty decisions. The army is a symbol of our pride and trust—no one can destroy it."
He also said, “I hope the elections can be held in April-May next year, but this is my personal opinion. Only the Chief Advisor has the authority to announce the exact date of the elections.” At the same time, he also informed about the preparations for the national celebration of the one-year anniversary of the mass uprising in July-August.
At the end of the post, he expressed hope, “The first verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be published by August.
