Talking to reporters at his residence in Gulshan on Friday afternoon, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said that it should be made clear what was discussed in the meeting between Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin.

He said, “We believe that the Chief Advisor has given a message to the CEC about the preparations to hold the elections before the start of Ramadan—that is, in the first half of February 2026. However, if the matter was officially informed, the nation would have been reassured.”

Salahuddin said that after the meeting of BNP’s top leaders in London, the Chief Advisor was called upon to formally inform the Election Commission about the decision. “It is not yet clear whether Thursday’s meeting is part of that process or not,” he said.

The CEC had earlier said that all preparations for holding the elections would be completed by September. Various works including updating the voter list, purchasing materials, and training are in process. Salahuddin said, “There is no need for separate preparation for these processes. These tasks are done on an ongoing basis after the schedule is announced.”

Not local elections, but national elections first

Regarding the demand to hold local government elections first, he said, “All political parties agree on the timing of holding national elections. In this situation, there is no opportunity to hold local elections first. This will hinder the national parliamentary elections.”

He also said, “We have fought for the national parliamentary elections, for establishing voting rights—not for local government elections. Now the main task is to organize a fair, impartial national election.”
