
The government has declared the ‘MES’ Building No. 54, adjacent to Bashar Road in Dhaka Cantonment, as a temporary prison. Although a notification in this regard was issued by the Prisons-1 Branch of the Home Ministry on Sunday (October 12), the matter was informed on Monday (October 13).
Earlier, on October 8, the International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants against 25 former and current army officers on charges of disappearance and murder.
At a press conference on October 11, Army Adjutant General Major General Md. Hakimuzzaman said that among the accused, 9 are retired, 1 is in the LPR and 15 are currently working.
The next day, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said that the officers who are in the custody of the army must be produced in court.
The notification said that this decision has been taken by order of the President in accordance with Section 541(1) of the Bangladesh Criminal Procedure Code, 1898 and Section 3(B) of the Prisons Act, 1894. The declaration will be effective immediately. However, the notification did not mention the purpose behind using the building as a temporary prison.
