On Thursday (April 17) night, the Immigration Department conducted a raid in Jalan Barat, Jalan Melati, Jalan Imbi and six nearby residential blocks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and detained a total of 506 foreign nationals, including 165 Bangladeshis. The raid has created extreme anxiety and panic among expatriate Bangladeshis.
These immigrants were detained on charges of illegally residing in Malaysia, violating pass conditions, overstaying, and employing illegal immigrants. About 185 members of various government forces participated in the raid. In addition to Bangladeshis, those arrested include citizens of Nepal and Indonesia, aged between 25 and 65.
In this raid conducted on the basis of intelligence information, the documents of 895 expatriates were initially verified, of which 506 were detained because their documents were not correct. Expatriates living in Malaysia are repeatedly terrified by such raids.
Meanwhile, from January to April 16 this year, 52,318 migrants were checked across Malaysia. Of these, 22,486 were detained for not having valid documents.
On the other hand, the Malaysian Immigration Department said that legal action has also been taken against 491 employers for allegedly engaging in the employment of illegal foreigners. The detainees have been kept at the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot for further investigation.
