The entry of yarn-laden trucks into Benapole port is blocked due to the ban on yarn imports from India. Although 450 to 500 trucks of goods arrive at this port every day, 60-70 of them contain yarn required for the garment sector. However, yarn has stopped coming through this route since April 15.
Importers say that this has significantly reduced the volume of import and export of goods through the port. However, the Benapole Port Authority has said that imports of other products are normal.
The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) says that the local industry was being harmed due to India's comparatively low yarn exports. The organization believes that stopping imports via land will protect the local industry and increase production capacity.
However, the knitwear industry owners' organization BKMEA has disagreed on this matter. Mohammad Hatem, the organization's president, claims that many small and medium entrepreneurs used to import yarn from India because they got it at a low price. They will face the most losses due to the ban on imports via land.
Meanwhile, yarn import by sea and air is ongoing. In addition, there is an opportunity to bring yarn by land against LCs opened before April 13.
