Indefinite 'complete shutdown', divisional and national rallies announced for three-point demands
The 'complete shutdown' program ongoing in all engineering and technology universities in the country for three-point demands will continue until further notice, said Mohammad Wali Ullah, president of the Engineers' Rights Movement.
At a press conference at the IEB office in the capital on Thursday (August 28) evening, he said that rallies will be organized in divisional cities early next week and later in Dhaka, a national rallies.
He also said that there is anger over the lack of an investigation committee into the police attack on students. If action is not taken against the culprits, stricter programs will be implemented.
The protesters demanded that academicians be included in the working group of the formed committee and that they will not give more than 15 days.
Their three-point demands:
1. Assistant Engineer (9th grade): Appointment of only B.Sc. Engineering degree holders, no quota or alternative posts.
2. Sub-Assistant Engineer (10th Grade): Diploma Engineers and B.Sc. graduates of related disciplines will be allowed to participate in the exam.
3. Protection of the Engineer title: No one without B.Sc. Engineering will be able to use the title of 'Engineer' - a law should be made for this. At the same time, non-accredited courses should be brought under the ambit of recognition quickly.
