Mustafa Zaman Abbasi was born on December 8, 1936, in the village of Balrampur in Cooch Behar district, India. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Kolkata. He obtained a BA (Hons) degree from Dhaka University in 1959 and an MA degree in 1960.
In addition to music, he hosted various music-related programs on radio and television. He was also well-known as a columnist.
