The Election Commission (EC) said in a notification on Tuesday (July 15) that none of the 144 new political parties that applied for registration met the quality standards in the initial screening. Letters have already been sent to 62 parties in the first phase; letters will be sent to the remaining 82 parties in the second phase. Although there is an opportunity to fill the gaps within 15 days, the application may be rejected if the corrections are not made within the stipulated time.
Earlier, the EC invited applications from political parties for registration by April 20. Later, the deadline was extended to June 22. A total of 144 parties applied within the stipulated time. Currently, the number of registered political parties in the country is 50.
