The construction of the much-awaited rail and road bridge in Chittagong has officially begun. The foundation stone of the Kalurghat Bridge to be built over the Karnaphuli River was laid by the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, at the Chittagong Circuit House around 11 am on Wednesday (May 14).

Speaking at the event, the Chief Advisor said, “I have many personal memories of the Kalurghat Bridge. This bridge has historical importance. Many people from Boalkhali are present here today—the first step has been taken to fulfill their long-standing desire. Once the new bridge is built, the long-standing suffering of the people of Chittagong will end.”

Road Transport and Bridge Advisor Muhammad Faozul Kabir Khan said, “The people of southern Chittagong have been demanding a new Kalurghat Bridge over the Karnaphuli River for a long time. With the start of construction today, that dream is moving towards realization. The people of Boalkhali and the southern region are very happy about this.”

He further said, “The current bridge was built in 1931. If its lifespan is considered to be 80 years, it was completed in 2011. The new bridge is planned to be completed by 2029 and commissioned in 2030.”

Earlier, at around 9:15 am, Professor Yunus reached his home district of Chittagong for the first time as the head of government. As part of the day-long program, he will participate in several important events including the fifth convocation of Chittagong University.
