On Friday (May 30) morning, Special Assistant to the Principal Advisor to the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faiz Ahmed Tayyab, said in a verified Facebook post that mobile networks in various parts of the country have been severely damaged due to the low-pressure disaster in the Bay of Bengal.
He said that as of Friday morning, a total of 5,904 mobile towers (sites) in the country have been completely shut down, which is about 35.8 percent of the total sites in the country. The network structures in Barisal, Sylhet South, Tangail, Chandpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka North, Comilla, Noakhali and Chittagong South regions have been affected the most. Mobile signals and internet services have been completely shut down in many places in these areas.
In addition, another 8,262 mobile sites have been disconnected from the power supply and have fallen under the category of 'mains failure', which is about 44 percent of the total sites. As a result, only 64.2 percent of the sites in the country are currently operational.
To keep the services running, telecom operators and tower companies have added portable generators to 624 sites as an alternative system and 504 more generators are on the way, which are being installed quickly and the work is underway to start the sites.
Faiz Ahmed Tayyab said that mobile operators, tower companies and rural electricity officials are working day and night to deal with the disaster situation across the country.
