On Tuesday (July 22), around 12:00 am, 9-year-old Nafi died while undergoing treatment in bed number 10 of the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the capital. The matter was confirmed by the institute's resident physician, Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman.
Earlier, around 3:00 am on Monday, Nafi's sister, Nazia, a third-grade student, died in the same accident. 90 percent of her body was burned. The siblings lived with their parents in the Kamarpara area of Uttara. Nafi was a first-grade student.
Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman said that Nafi, who was admitted to the Milestone School and College campus in Diabari with severe burns in a plane crash, had 95 percent of his body burned. In the end, he succumbed to death without responding to treatment.
He also said that more than fifty burn patients were admitted to the National Burn Institute in that accident. Of them, 11 have died at the National Burn Institute and 1 at Dhaka Medical College so far.
While the ISPR confirmed the death toll of 31 till 12 noon, the latest update from the Health Department showed 27 deaths, 23 of whom were children. As the night progressed, the death toll rose to 32. Of these, 20 bodies have been handed over to their relatives, while 6 have been kept at the CMH morgue.
According to the latest list provided by the ISPR, many of the injured are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
